A.01 — The Gap

You already know something is missing.

You open a job listing for an architecture position. It asks for Revit. Fine — you've heard of Revit.

Then it asks for BIM coordination experience. LOD 350. Clash detection. Federated models. Navisworks. Common Data Environment.

You don't know what most of those words mean, and there's no course in your syllabus that explains them.

So you do what everyone does. You download Revit. You watch a few tutorials. You learn to draw a wall, place a door, generate an elevation.

And you can do all of that now — but you still can't answer the question that actually matters in an interview:

Why would a firm pay you to do it?

That gap isn't a knowledge gap about software. It's a gap in understanding the profession. And no tutorial fixes it, because tutorials teach tools, not work.

A.02 — The Correction

BIM is not Revit.

This is the single most common misunderstanding, and almost every beginner has it.

Revit is a piece of software. BIM is how the modern construction industry plans, coordinates, documents and delivers buildings. Revit is one of the tools used inside that process — an important one, but one of many.

Learning Revit without understanding BIM is like learning to type without learning a language. You will be fast at producing something you don't understand.

This is also why so many people finish a Revit course and still don't get hired. They can operate the software. They cannot describe what happens on a project, who they'd be working with, what they'd be responsible for, or where their output goes next.

In two hours, you'll understand the process first. The software makes sense afterwards.

  • —You're an architecture student — final year, or close to it — and about to start applying.
  • —You've graduated and you're finding that a portfolio alone isn't getting responses.
  • —You're from civil, structural or MEP, and BIM keeps coming up in job descriptions.
  • —You're working in AutoCAD and you can see where the industry is heading.
  • —You're considering a switch into BIM and you want to understand it properly before spending money on a course.

Don't come if this is you.

  • You want a Revit tutorial. This session teaches the profession, not the software. There are free tutorials for buttons.
  • You want a job guarantee. I'm not going to offer you one, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does.
  • You're already working as a BIM coordinator. You'd find this basic.
  • You want to be sold to for two hours. You won't be — there's one brief, optional mention of a next step at the very end, and that's it.

I'm from civil / MEP, not architecture. Is this relevant?

Yes. BIM is a multi-discipline process — structural and MEP teams work inside it as much as architects do. The framing leans architectural, but the process, roles and career paths apply across all three.

Do I need Revit installed?

No. Nothing to install, nothing to prepare. This is not a software session.

I've never used any BIM software. Is it too early for me?

No — it's the right time. Understanding the process before you learn the tool is the correct order. Most people do it backwards.

Will I be able to use Revit after this?

No, and any two-hour session that claims otherwise isn't being straight with you. You'll understand what Revit is for and what to learn first. That's a different, more useful thing.

Will I get a certificate?

No — this session does not include a certificate.
